Biomedical Treatments Help Autism Spectrum Patients
The symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) have traditionally only been treated with strong psychiatric medications such as stimulants, antipsychotics, and sedatives. Unfortunately, proper medical testing to look for the underlying causes of the symptoms is usually not completed before these medications are prescribed. How to properly test for and treat ASDs is a subspecialty of only a handful of trained doctors and allied health practitioners. With proper diagnosis, these patients discover that they have many health problems that medical treatment can help to not only minimize their symptoms, but in some cases, actually cure them.
There are many reasons why these diagnostic tools and treatments are not available in the medical “mainstream", the most important of which is the suddenness of the exploding numbers of autistic patients. The medical system overall just has not had time to catch up. Additionally, the medical system is driven by a pharmaceutical culture of medication at the expense of improving health naturally. Political factors also affect this issue - it would be very expensive to change our vaccine policy, clean up our environment, and stop poisoning our children. It is "cheaper" in the short run to ignore these issues and try to avoid liability. Despite all this, affected children need help today, and the VAST Foundation is here to help.
VAST Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness, helping to reduce the financial burden for families and caregivers of ASD patients, and educating people about the availability of natural and alternative treatments for ASDs that work to actually fix the problem, rather than just trying to cover it up.
Funded treatments
Biomedical treatments can often be very helpful for ASD patients, but proper assessment and treatment is necessary. Many insurance plans do not cover these treatments, which can be costly to administer, often reaching many thousands of dollars a year per child. VAST Foundation is committed to helping qualified applicants pay for the services they require. Funded services include but are not limited to:
- Initial medical assessment - history and physical exam, ordering tests
- Lab work - multiple blood, urine, stool, and hair samples
- Nutritional supplements - needed due to poor diet (ASD kids are usually extremely picky eaters), and gastrointestinal problems with poor digestion and absorption of nutrients, and to correct biochemical abnormalities caused by toxic overload
- Chelation - taking medications under close medical supervision to safely remove toxic metals from the body
- Hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOT) - to enhance oxygenation of the brain, help heal the gut, enhance detoxification, and decrease overall inflammation
- Intravenous therapies for patients who are unable to fully resolve their nutritional deficiencies via oral supplements, or who need a more intensive form of chelation via IV infusion therapies
